HOW LONG AM I 'POSTNATAL' FOR?
2010-02-01

How long are you 'postnatal' for? The answer is actually forever but isn’t it sad that in the world we live today women are desperate to sweep this period of time under the carpet.

Media images of celebrity mums snapping back into their bikinis in the blink of an eye, and adverts with 'yummy mummies' all toned and trim are unrealistic and unhelpful. As a ‘real’ postnatal mum you should not feel pressurised but be proud of your postnatal body and accept that this is a period in your life that cannot be discarded like a dirty nappy!

The effects of the pregnancy hormone which caused joint laxity may continue for up to five months – longer if you’re breastfeeding – and this is the body’s way of encouraging you not to race back into vigorous and mainstream activities.

When can I do sit ups? Great news - you never need to do them ever again! The superficial abdominal muscles do not need to be super-strong in this position as they’re only required to get you out of bed or the bath. We do however, need the abdominal muscles to be strong in functional positions – so why lie down to exercise them!!

Maintaining a good upright posture switches on your stabilising muscles (abdominals and pelvic floor) – slumping switches them off! You won’t feel the burn but they’ll be working in a supporting role like invisible lycra!

Pushy Mothers are fitness industry leaders with the inclusion of functional movements in the Pushy Syllabus to challenge balance and stability and improve fitness for everyday life. Check out our Put me down Mum and Pick me up Mum exercises.

At Pushy Mothers our mantra is for women to Push Don’t Rush! (it takes nine months to make a baby so at least nine more to get back on track.) As a Pushy Member you are lucky enough to have your expert Pushy Instructor to hand so don’t forget to utilize their expert knowledge to make the right exercise choice to suit your stage of postnatal recovery.
